i have to disagree a bit about Greece. If you go to Crete, particularly the Western side, there is a lot of stuff to do vs. just sitting around on the beach. I wouldn’t advise Mykonos for honeymooners since it is more of a party island. i also do not recall seeing even one family while in Santorini. agree with you though on the cruise ship thing

I have to say I don’t agree with the part about it being easier to get around in Italy.. Unless you have a private service the bus system is more disorganized in Amalfi and the employees are not very helpful. They wouldn’t answer tourists questions and let them run back and forth trying to figure out which bus was going where. Very rude if you don’t speak Italian. Also it costs more for transportation and many times you wait and the bus is full so the driver won’t stop. It takes long to get around. In Greece the bus system is more organized and they direct you better. Even amidst all the chaos and crowds. The bus is also much cheaper and of course because Greek Islands are smaller it doesn’t take long to get somewhere. In Santorini they have a person on the bus that will call out the stops which is great and you can pay on the bus whereas in Italy you must find a store to sell you a ticket prior. Even if you want to go to another island in Greece the flight or depending where the ferry can be much faster than taking the bus from Sorrento to Amalfi ! They should make it more tourist friendly and efficient since it costs so much to visit

Having been both places twice, I definitely agree with your assessments, Katie! I will say that I’ve been both places in late April/ early May and again in June and those few weeks make a HUGE difference in crowds and $. I’d also say that you can get the Amalfi coast experience in a 2-3 day side trip while in Italy, but any more than 1 Greek island and you need a solid week. Just need to win the lottery so I can just continually shuttle between NYC>>!

I’ve been to the Almalfi Coast before but never to Greece. Loved your comparison piece! Very well written and though out. The tips you offered were great for all budgets.

This is one of your best and most helpful travel posts ever! I have been to Italy but never the Amalfi Coast, and I also haven’t been to Greece yet. Both of these are bucket list destinations and you made it so helpful to see the pros and cons of each! Sounds like the Amalfi Coast is out of my budget for a few years haha 😉
