Comparing holiday photos really puts into perspective just how much can change in a year. I can’t believe how tiny Nate was just twelve months ago! He looks like such a little man now and I’m not ok! I’m SO excited because this year is the first time we’re entertaining family and friends in our home for Thanksgiving. Well, technically we’re having a post-Thanksgiving dinner this Saturday, but I still plan on serving all the traditional dishes. Turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes– YUM.

What To Wear To New York City In Winter (& At The Holidays!)

I’ll tell you right now it’s always best to plan for bundling up! Chances are that you’re going to be spending some time outside whether that’s exploring Central Park or walking from dinner to your hotel so you’re going to need a very warm coat.

I have a few different winter coats that I interchange depending on the temperature and where I’m going. I’m a BIG baby in the cold so if the temperature falls lower that 40 degrees I’m 100% in a down parka. I scored the wallet-friendly puffer coats I’m wearing here from Nordstrom— both would be perfect to pack for a cold winter trip to New York! If you’re looking for a coat that’s a little more heavy duty (NYC winter can feel like the arctic at times…) I highly suggest Canada Goose down parkas.

Finding a casual down puffer jacket is easy, but deciding on a coat to wear over a nice dress or formal outfit can be trickier. If you have plans to see a Broadway show or dinner reservations at a nice restaurant then you’re likely not going to want to show up looking like the Michelin man– I’ve been there! Faux fur or long wool coats are always my go-to for cold evenings in the city. Styles like these are super warm and look stylish when paired with formal outfits.

SHOP FAUX FUR COATS + FORMAL JACKETS

This is my FAVORITE fleece pullover! It comes in a few colors and is on sale too.

If you’re visiting New York City in winter you’re 100% going to want to pack layers and all the cold weather accessories like a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Even if your coat has a hood, I would still suggest having earmuffs or beanie to keep your ears warm because city wind tunnels are NO joke. Trust me, even just a few five minute walk on a really cold day can be incredibly painful when you don’t have anything covering your ears and neck.

COLD WEATHER ACCESSORIES

Also make sure you pack a few sweaters you can mix and match along with a cozy fleece pullover or thick cardigan!

For footwear you have a few different options. If snow, rain or freezing temps are in the forecast, then I suggest bringing a pair of weather-resistant boots that you know you can walk in. If you’re blessed with sunny skies on your trip, then you can definitely get away with wearing sneakers. These are my personal favorite errand/walking/travel/everyday sneaker that I wear year round– I even wear them to the gym and get so many compliments!

SHOP WINTER BOOTS

These are my go-to short suede booties! You can snag ’em now in a few different colors.

Besides sneakers, two of my other go-to winter shoe styles are short booties and over the knee boots. If I need to wear heels somewhere then I usually opt for a tall heeled boot. These are much easier to walk in and more durable that a dainty pump, which can easily get stuck in a sidewalk crack or subway grate (yes, it’s happened.)

STYLISH SHORT BOOTIES

I highly suggest investing in a pair of over the knee boots— I wear these on repeat during the colder months!

If you follow this guide when packing you shouldn’t have anything to worry about on your trip to New York. The great thing about visiting a big city is that even if the weather changes or you forget something, there are a ton of fabulous stores steps away. I think there was no better way to kick off recapping our trip to Europe than by sharing one of my favorite moments from the first city we visited: Paris. We may be home in New York, but I just might have left my heart in this city. Located just steps away from the Arc de Triomphe is the beautiful Peninsula Paris. The arc was our last tourist stop of the day so after climbing to the top and taking in those sweeping Paris views, we walked over to the hotel for its famed afternoon high tea service.

During the holiday season the Peninsula offers a special festive tea menu featuring decadent scones, finger-sandwiches and tons of sweets. We went all out and each ordered our own three-layer tower of yumminess along with a pot of herbal tea. PS that little cup with the straw was a butternut squash soup– so cute and most importantly delicious!

If you have plans to visit Paris, I can’t recommend making a reservation for high tea enough! It was pretty much the perfect afternoon and the best way to wind down and warm up after a chilly day exploring Paris. It was really special having a reason to dress up and dine somewhere so elegant. It was one of the most memorable moments of our trip and made for some great pictures. xo

A navy velvet jumpsuit. I never thought that I’d need or want one in my closet, but now I don’t know how I lived so long without one in my life. Omg gals, this is the holiday party look to be rocking this season– I never want to put on a cocktail dress again! New York gals (or anyone planning a visit this month) you have to pop by the Ralph Lauren store on Madison Avenue to see the holiday decorations. This year they have the most gorgeous winter wonderland theme. I’m absolutely obsessed! The Upper East Side always knows how to embrace the holidays in the most elegant way.

Oh just sharing a few snaps from one of my favorite places EVER at this time of year. The Lotte New York Palace Hotel always has the most epic Christmas tree (see my past posts from it here and here) it’s become a personal tradition for me to go at least once every December to see it. Over the weekend when my family was visiting I used my New York City Holiday Guide as a roadmap for planning everything we did and of course the Palace Hotel Christmas tree was one of our stops.

Located a few blocks away from the typical tourist grind in Midtown, the Lotte New York Palace comes out of nowhere as you head up Madison Avenue. We arrived around 1PM last Friday and were pleasantly surprised there weren’t too many people there also taking pictures. It really is the most photogenic tree– absolutely pretty from every angle!

I love how they keep the tree lit throughout the day– look at those shimmering lights!

This sweater might just be my new favorite cableknit. I’ve been wearing it paired with leggings and over the knee boots non-stop! I also got a few questions over the weekend about my coat. It’s an old style, but I found a similar-looking one here.

Ah, it’s just so pretty. I love love love this time of year in the city and I’m so happy I was able to share it with my family for the first time. Happy Holidays, everyone
