I’ll just say it: January is my least favorite month for getting dressed. The air is cold and windy, the sidewalks are messy and wet, and every morning my first reaction to opening my weather app is to crawl back into the warmth of my bed.
This year I’m trying to break out of the inevitable post-holiday winter slump by actually putting some effort into how I layer clothes for cold weather aka resisting the urge to just throw on any scarf or hat before running out the door. 😳
The past two weeks have been bitter cold and there have been multiple days where I would’ve been an absolute fool to leave my apartment not wearing my down parka. While it’s not the chicest coat in my closet, it gets the job done and keeps me warm. That’s what’s most important right?

I purchased my black parka last year and it’s served me incredibly well. I know black is boring, but it matches with everything and I mean I do live in New York. I also prefer coats with a longer cut as they comfortably cover knee-length dresses and cardigans.

When it comes to winter accessories I try to pair things based on color family. Here a beige beanie and a grey scarf complemented my blush-colored cardigan perfectly. When it comes to scarves I like ones that blanket-sized or square. This way I have the option of wrapping it multiple times around my neck or wearing it as a shawl once I remove my coat.

Snow boots aren’t necessarily known for being pretty and I’ve seen so many cringe-worthy clunky styles. Over the past three years, I’ve accumulated a few pairs that I personally think are cute and functional. These Muck Boots have a shearling lining and rugged soles with traction, which made them perfect for tackling last weekend’s messy sidewalks.

So how do you think I did? Layering success or do I look like the Michelin Man?
